Drop in to share a cup of tea, build cardboard teahouses and join workshops, talks and presentations

For one week BA (Hons) Interior and Spatial Design students from Chelsea College of Arts, University of the Arts London will move their studio space into Tate Exchange. You are invited to drop in to workshops, talks and presentations as fellow students, tutors or critics.

Join us in designing and constructing eight full-scale cardboard teahouses, drinking tea, and exchanging ideas around the historical, cultural, social and political significance of tea.

  • From Monday to Wednesday, drop in to help us design and construct the teahouses
  • On Thursday, once the teahouses are almost complete, join architect Rain Wu in performing tea ceremonies. Using a tea set designed as part of the 2016 artist in residence programme at the Design Museum, the ceremonies fuse East and West traditions.  At the end of the day on Thursday, you are invited to join the students for a guest lecture on the Japanese Way of Tea by Masayasu Tamiya.
  • Drop in on the final day of our Tate Exchange residency to be a guest critic. Join Chelsea College of Arts staff and students for a review of Tea Exchange and stay on into the evening to hear Marsha Bradfield’s performative lecture, Steeped: a legacy of tea on the history, culture and politics of tea.

This event is programmed by the a Tate Exchange Associate, and facilitated by and architects and .
